GPS Compare

This is an old table I put together....circa 2004. I dug it up to go along with my updated GPS instructions. I hope it is still somewhat relavant.

...and the table breaks the site theme...I'm not sure why...sorry, it doesn't look too good...

colour is nice…but is it necessary? Overkill for flying I think

quad helix tracks satellites more reliably - you don't want to
lose your satellites while flying

Thumb Stick N/A N/A Yes Yes N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A useful in the eTrex's but not needed with the 12s and 76s -
they have a cursor pad
Ext. Ant. Hookup N/A N/A N/A N/A No Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes not needed when flying - useful while driving as satellite reception in cars is sometimes poor
WAAS capability N/A N/A Yes Yes N/A Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes WAAS is a satellite in the Southern hemisphere - useful if you
travel to comps down there
Glide Ratio, Glide Ratio to Destination N/A N/A N/A Yes N/A N/A N/A Yes N/A Yes VERY useful when trying to get to goal - doesn't take wind
into consideration though…
Electronic Compass N/A Yes N/A Yes N/A N/A N/A Yes N/A Yes  A battery killer and not needed while you are
moving.  barely handy on the ground either.
Barometric Altimeter N/A Yes N/A Yes N/A N/A N/A Yes N/A Yes all models listed here (other than the Garmin 12) records altitudes -
great for flight analysis on a computer.

Gets you more points for
your HOLC scoring.  Barometeric altimeter improves accuracy in the
altitude calculations for final glide.
Proximity Waypoints N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes can set 400m radius around turn points so it can alert you when
you are successfully in sector. A definite competition advantage
Canadian List price $132.95 $265.95 $237.95 $349.95 $195.95 $251.95 $349.95 $433.95 $587.95 $650.95
All of the
above GPSs are compatible with the verification program we use at this
competition

One other KEY piece of info is that the eTrex's and
the Summits DO NOT allow you to change the recording interval.  They do
have a lot of memory in them but you can't increase the interval (default is
every second) on longer flights...you risk erasing your beginning of your
flight or filling up your memory before you cross the finish line
.
