Pre-Worlds Day 4
We went up Chabre mountain over Laragne and everyone set up with south winds trickling in. There were two tasks proposed, and the meet staff was concerned about overdevelopment. Launch opened at 12:30pm, and things looked easily soarable, so the entire team was keen to take off before 1pm. Once in the air, it was actually hard to keep out of the clouds. They were all working and we just spent time driving around sightseeing trying to stay out of the wisps.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Another Dave Gibson design from a pilot in Spain.
In hindsight, we could have had a task start well before 2pm, but 2pm was the first available start time. The sky looked dark on courseline, but I couldn't make out any rain or lightening. Near 2pm, Davis got on the radio and started asking if we had heard the task was cancelled. It took several minutes to get a definitive answer, but eventually we did find out that the day had been cancelled due to rain and lightening on course. (I don't think this was true)
I tried to gather up my playmates for some flying, but couldn't raise anyone on the radio. The sky was inviting to the south, so I flew between Laragne and Sisterone in the valley checking out my landing area the other day and sightseeing over the villages. Eventually I joined everyone else at the campground.
Some pilots went out and flew the task as they hadn't heard about the cancellation. A few made it to goal and said that although conditions were dark, there was no rain and the weather was safe. The meet directors jumped the gun for sure.
We tried to make the most of our day by taking off with some french pilots to enjoy some via ferrata. (more on that in another post)
Airtime: 2:10. Flights: 1.
