Fraser Valley XC

FV XC Turnpoints updated

I had a request to not use numbers in the turnpoint names to help you navigate thru the points while in flight...a great suggestion (thanks Nicole).

So all the files on the rules page have been updated and are ready for download. The coordinates are the same, just the names have changed.

Enjoy!

Fraser Valley Turnpoints are posted

I posted all the turnpoints and maps for the Fraser Valley XC Series that starts this weekend. Stop by http://events.dowsett.ca/2006/fvxc/rules and study up for the weekend - you will have a lot more to think about and strategize on this competition. We won't be telling you when and where to fly - it is up to you to figure out the furthest distance you can rack up with the turnpoints given to you...and you can only use each turnpoint once...

At least treat yourself to a 3D tour of the valley in Google Earth that shows all the turnpoints we are using (http://events.dowsett.ca/files/FVXC.kml).

GAP parameters

GAP parameters are never easy to set. See the recent discussions we had about them at the Flytec Championships. They need to be set 'properly' to ensure we have reasonable validity so the results pilots get from this sort of event (turnpoint accumulation) is weighted properly versus the points we get for our national ranking from traditional Race to Goal style events.

I have a spreadsheet that Davis Straub made up at the Flytec meet to help guide you thru selecting these parameters. So this is what I set them to:
Nominal Distance: 30km (PG); 40km (HG)

Scores

Scores will be posted here.

And animated tracklogs will be posted here for flights up until the end of May (after that it is a paid service and I am uncertain if the remaining will be posted there).

Fraser Valley XC - format changed

So we are going to try something a bit different at the Fraser Valley XC Series (HG & PG)this year. it has traditionally been a traditional GAP/RACE event for many years but the mood has loosened up and the desire to race to goal seems to have dropped...so has attendence so we hope this will spark some interest.

We are going to try the Turnpoint Accumulation system built into the CompeGPS verification program. I used it once briefly at the Bridal Falls Air Races and the system worked. The event wasn't really an XC event so it wasn't well attended so we aren't able to see what the scores work out to.

Turnpoint Accumulation Tasks

There is a form of task that you can set in CompeGPS (the flight verification software I use to score the Nats) called Turnpoint Accumulation. It's similar to the Tiger Tag comp they have at Tiger Mountain and the very popular Chelan Classic.

What it does is you give your competition pilots a designated launch and a set of waypoints and leave it up to them when they want to launch and choose what turnpoints they feel they can attain and in what ever order they want. The only catch is they can only use each turnpoint once!
